Stories from Growing Up Strong

Six Weeks to “I Can” in Medicine Hat

At George A. Davison Elementary, a six-week Alberta Ballet residency turns nervous first steps into confident movement.

By spring’s end, students in grades 1 to 4—and one once-shy Grade 2 student—step back into class with pride and a growth mindset.

Two Traditions,
One Voice

Culture meets craft as Indigenous youth explore Powwow and Ballet side by side. Co-taught by a Powwow Dancer and an Outreach Teacher Ballet, the class gives both traditions equal voice.

When local media visited the Edmonton program, students lined up to speak about the experience—holding moccasins and ballet slippers with pride.

From Bharatanatyam to Ballet

When Revathi moved to Canada from India, she hoped her daughter would learn Bharatanatyam. But the six-year-old was captivated by ballet instead.

Ballet was unfamiliar—and unaffordable—until Revathi found the free Alberta Ballet community program at Calgary’s Centre for Newcomers.

“I’m proud to show younger students back home what’s possible. This experience helped me share parts of myself I didn’t even know were there.”
